This was a Christmas staff celebration that makes a difference! The Centrica team packed 10,000 rice meals for The Joseph Foundation in Zimbabwe, in an event that was full of festive cheer.
The joy of rice packing
We see people coming back to rice packing again and again. It’s genuinely good fun and so satisfying to know you’re doing something that makes the world a better place.
On this occasion, it was one of the Centrica team that had taken part in a rice packing event with us before. They saw its potential as a great team building activity, so recommended it to their supervisor.
Around 50 staff took part over the course of a few hours one afternoon, at a space on their premises. For a team that spends most their time working on computers, the practical and physical activity of rice packing was a rewarding break from their day-to-day work.

“The Centrica Staff loved taking part in rice-meal packing. Everyone who join in was enthusiastic and left with the feeling that they’d made a difference in the life of a child in another country.”

The gift that keeps on giving
The Centrica team packed 10,000 meals in one afternoon, which were shipped to our partners in Zimbabwe. Elna heads up The Joseph Foundation, who work in Epworth, a neglected area of Harare.
With Elna, we feed over 15,700 children in Epworth through local schools. As well as feeding every child at school, we work with local nutritionists to identify children who are particularly malnourished. These children can be offered extra support, such as regular food parcels for their families.
Every single meal we send over there is vital to the life and wellbeing of a child. The food isn’t just about filling a hungry belly once, as good as that is.
From survival to significance

This is Hope.
She lives with her grandmother, aunt, sister and 2 cousins in a basic brick shack. Her parents have both died. Neither her grandmother nor her aunt have regular work, so the family often go to bed without eating anything.
But through the rice meals packed by teams like Centrica’s:
She gains stability: she knows that every day she come to school, she will receive a meal.
The meals help her work towards sustainability: a nourished body means an alert and focused brain. She can pay attention at school, developing essential skills to escape the poverty cycle.
As she grows into an independent adult, able to earn a living wage, she gain significance. This is the greatest gift of all. She has learnt that she is valued and valuable; she has learnt that her voice matters.
Hope and all these children, currently living in a marginalised slum area of the city, become people who can take part in the future of their nation.
From survival to significance: it started with a staff team Christmas meal pack.
